RIPPER OWENS: entrevista

Sin dudas, Tim "Ripper" Owens es una de las más grandes voces que haya dado la historia del heavy metal a nivel mundial y lo demuestra con un curriculum envidiable: Judas Priest, Beyond Fear, Iced Earth, Yngwie Malmsteen, Charred Walls of the Damned, Winter's Bane, etc.

Desde Rock Bottom nos pusimos en contacto con el Ripper para hablar de su presente, pasado y futuro. A continuación la nota completa:

Rock Bottom: - El año pasado has fundado la Ripper's Rock House (restaurant/barbacoa/pub), ¿cómo nació la idea de hacerlo? ¿Qué nos puedes contar sobre el lugar?

Tim "Ripper" Owens: - Mi idea era hacer algo local. Tenía un lugar con buena comida y bebida y tenía buenas bandas y un buen sistema de sonido. Es un lugar genial y tiene toda clase de memorabilia de mis viajes a través del mundo del rock.

Rock Bottom: - The last year you established the Ripper's Rock House, how came that idea? What can you tell us about it? 

Tim "Ripper" Owens: - Well I just wanted to do something local, Have a place that had good food and drink and had great bands and a good PA...This place is really cool and has all kinds of memorabilia from my travels in the rock world.

Rock Bottom: - En los últimos años fuiste miembro de Dio Disciples, Yngwie Malmsteen's Rising Force y HAIL, además de tu banda solista... ¿Cómo manejaste tu tiempo entre aquellos proyectos?

Tim "Ripper" Owens: - Bueno, no estuve con Yngwie por algunos años, lo mismo que Hail... Principalmente  giré como solista. Hice algunos shows con Dio Disciples que adoro hacer. También hice algunas giras con Project Rock que comenzó como una banda de estrellas y ahora ya hemos grabado canciones y las vamos a poner un CD! Me gusta estar ocupado, me refiero a que si hiciera una sola banda, no podría pagar mis cuentas y debería conseguir un trabajo adecuado... jaja.

Rock Bottom: - The last years you were a member of Dio Disciples, Yngwie Malmsteen's Rising Force, HAIL and a solo band...How did you manage your time between those projects?  

Tim "Ripper" Owens: - Well I haven't been in Yngwie for a few years and I haven't done Hail in a few years..I Mainly tour solo..I did do a few Dio Disciples shows which I love doing..I also did some tours with Project Rock..That started as an all star band and now we have recorded music and will be putting out a cd!!  I do like to stay busy, I mean If i only did one band, I could not afford to pay my bills and would need to get a proper job..LOL

Rock Bottom: - ¿Tienes planes de grabar un disco nuevo? ¿En solitario o con alguna de tus bandas o algún proyecto?

Tim "Ripper" Owens: - He estado trabajando en el nuevo disco de Beyond Fear. Toda la música está lista y parte de las voces, pero no tenemos contrato discográfico, lo cual lo hace difícil de editar. Como dije antes, tengo el disco de Project Rock que será lanzado en el 2015 y también tengo un proyecto llamado Tred con el cual estamos mandando demos...

Rock Bottom: - Do you have any plans to record a new album? Solo or with Beyond Fear or with Malmsteen or any other project?  

Tim "Ripper" Owens: - I have been working on a new Beyond Fear, all the music is done and some of the vocals, but we aren't signed to a label so it makes it tough.. like said I have the Project Rock that will be coming out in 2015 and I have a project called Tred that we are shopping demos of.

Rock Bottom: - ¿Cómo surgió la idea de hacer una lista de temas acústicos como lo has hecho este año?

Tim "Ripper" Owens: - Lo del acústico surgió mientras tocábamos algunos shows locales, pero luego fuimos a Canadá y a Nueva York para hacer algunos shows. Añadimos más de mis temas a la lista, como "Cathedral Spires", "Hell is Home", "Lost and Found", "Death Row", ya sabes... junto a otras canciones. Era algo con lo que quería girar. Es genial tocar este material pero hacerlo como en un concierto donde los fanáticos cantan. Además hago medio show luego me voy donde está el público y me saco algunas fotos y eso, para después volver al escenario por más canciones. Es como un show privado. 

Rock Bottom: - How came the idea of doing an acoustic set like you did this year? 

Tim "Ripper" Owens: - The acoustic thing just started as doing some local shows at my place, but then we went to Canada and new York and did a few shows..added more of my stuff to the set, like cathedral spires and hell is home and lost and found, death row..you know my stuff  along with other songs..This is something that I want to put a tour together with  It is just so cool to play this but make it like a concert where the fans sing..plus I do half the show then come out with the crowd and take photos and stuff then go back up for more songs...It is like a VIP show.

Rock Bottom: - En mi opinión eres uno de los mejores vocalistas del metal de todos los tiempos, y después de 20 años tu voz sigue estando igual... podrías contarnos alguno de tus secretos? Tal vez alguna técnica o algún consejo.

Tim "Ripper" Owens: - Bueno, para mi cantar en directo es muy importante, quiero decir, no quiero escuchar "Ripper tiene 47 por lo cual no debería alcanzar algunas notas"... Por lo cual trabajo duro para asegurarme de que sí puedo (o al menos tener la esperanza de que puedo). Trato de dormir bien, no hablar mucho y no tomar mucho alcohol...

Rock Bottom: - For me you are one of the best metal singers of all the times, and after more than 20 years your voice still the same... could you share with us some of your secrets? Maybe any technique or any advise... 

Tim "Ripper Owens": - Well to me singing live is very important, I mean I don't want to hear, well Ripper is 47 so he should not be able to hit the notes...so I work hard on making sure I can (or hope I can ) I try and get my sleep, Not talk a lot and not drink a lot of alcohol...  

Rock Bottom: - Muchos sueñan con cantar o tocar en su banda favorita; ese sueño se volvió realidad para vos. ¿Cómo te sentiste cuando te uniste a Judas Priest? ¿No te volviste loco? jaja

Tim "Ripper" Owens: - Fue genial, lo adoré. ¡Que rapidez! Quiero decir, los miraba por tanto tiempo y luego estaba cantando para ellos y más tarde era su amigo... ¡Un momento genial de mi vida!

Rock Bottom: - A lot of people dream about sing or play any instrument with his favorite band; that dream came true for you. How did you feel when you joined Judas Priest? Didn't you driven mad? haha  

Tim "Ripper" Owens: - It was great, I loved it..What a rush, I mean I looked up to them for so long and then I was singing for them and then I was friends with them...Just a great time in my life!!

Rock Bottom: - La película "Rockstar" (2001, con Mark Wahlberg y Jennifer Aniston) está basada en vos... ¿Qué piensas sobre la misma? ¿Te gustó?

Tim "Ripper" Owens: - En verdad no me gusta. Esta bueno que se haya hecho pero antes que nada me hubiese gustado recibir algún dinero de la misma... jaja No, me gustaría que sea acorde a la vida real, me refiero a que hay muchos parecidos pero luego se va totalmente en otra dirección y hace el clásico estereotipo de sexo, drogas y rock n'roll... lo cual en verdad fue mucho mayor... jaja

Rock Bottom: - The movie "Rockstar" is based on you... what do you think about it? Do you like it?  

Tm "Ripper" Owens: - I really don't like it, it is cool that it was made but first off I would of liked some money from it..LOL   No I wish it was true to life, I mean a lot of similarities but then it just goes off into another direction and does the usual stereo type stuff, like sex, drugs and rock n roll..which just was a bit much..LOL.

Rock Bottom: - ¿Cuáles son los mejores momentos que has vivido en tu carrera?

Tim "Ripper" Owens: - Bueno, lo de Judas Priest fue genial, pero en verdad ahora es increíble. Me refiero a que toqué en lugares que no podría haber soñado que siquiera iría, y toqué con músicos con los que solo podía soñar. Por lo cual ahora esos son los mejores momentos de mi carrera.

Rock Bottom: - What are the best moments that you lived in your career? 

Tim "Ripper" Owens: - Well The priest thing was great, but really right now is so amazing, I mean I play places I could never of dreamt of going, and I jam with musicicans that I could of only dreamed of  so really it would have to be the moments in my career right now.

Rock Bottom: - ¿Cuáles son tus canciones favoritas para tocar en directo? De tu carrera solista o Dio o Judas...

Tim "Ripper" Owens: - Bueno, las amo todas. Quiero decir, amo cantar cosas de los discos "Jugulator" y "Demolition" porque Judas Priest no las tocará, por lo cual eso lo hace verdaderamente especial. Pero siempre amo cantar cualquiera de mis canciones. 

Rock Bottom: - What are your favourite songs to play live? From your solo stuff, or Dio, or Judas... 

Tim "Ripper" Owens: - Well I love em all, I mean I love singing stuff from Jugulator and Demolition because JP wont play them, so it makes it really special..But I always love singing everything from my stuff.

Rock Bottom: - Y por último... ¿Quiénes son tus influencias?

Tim "Ripper" Owens: - Ronnie James Dio, Rob Halford, Chris Cornell, Jon Oliva... ¡toda la música buena! jaja

Rock Bottom: - And for the last... what are your influences? 

Tim "Rippero" Owens: - Well, Dio, Rob, Chris Cornell, Jon Oliva  All the good stuff  LOL
