VIOLATOR: entrevista con Capaça

Siguiendo el cliché thrash, Violator se eligió un nombre que rimara con Kreator, se calzaron jeans rotos, remeras sin mangas y comenzaron a destrozar instrumentos y equipos a puro metal de la vieja escuela.

Con algo más de una década en la escena, sacaron grandes discos que los posicionaron como una de las bandas más prometedoras de thrash metal.

El 18 de abril Violator se estará presentando en el Asbury Music Club para darnos una descarga de brutalidad, y antes de su llegada a Buenos Aires, les dejamos una pequeña entrevista que realizamos con Capaça, uno de los violeros de la banda.

Rock Bottom: ¿Tienen planes para un nuevo disco de estudio?

Capaça: Hola Román, antes que nada, gracias por la oportunidad de entrevistarnos para Rock Bottom! Bueno, ahora mismo no tenemos planes para grabar disco nuevo. Claro que tenemos la intención de lanzar un nuevo disco de larga duración, pero como venimos de un año sabático y no tuvimos la chance de promocionar "Scenarios of Brutallity" en una gira, queremos disfrutar un poco más de nuestro último disco. Incluso que por más que no tengamos planes concretos para un disco nuevo, yo ya tengo algunas ideas para algunas canciones nuevas.

Rock Bottom: Do you have plans for a new studio release? 

Capaça: Hello Román! First of all, thanx for the opportunity of being interviewed for Rock Bottom! Well, right now we don't have plans for recording a new album. Off course we intend to release new full length, but since we are coming from a year break and because of that we didn't have the chance to promote Scenarios of Brutality on our gigs we want to enjoy a little bit more our last album. Even though we don't have concrete plans for a new album I already have some ideas for some new songs.

Rock Bottom: ¿Sienten presión para lanzar un gran disco tras el grandioso "Scenarios of Brutality"?

Capaça: Un poco. Tocamos Thrash Metal y somos muy estrictos sobre eso. Disfrutamos mucho de otros géneros del metal pero los usaremos en las canciones de Violator, por lo cual siempre es un desafío hacer un disco nuevo y mantenerse completamente fiel al género y no sonar repetitivos. Por otro lado ese sentimiento de "presión" nos hace tratar de mejorar nuestra música, lo cual encuentro asombroso. 

Rock Bottom: Do you feel pressure of making another great album after the awesome "Scenarios of Brutality"?

Capaça: A little bit. We play Thrash Metal and we are really strict about it. We enjoy a lot of other metal genres but it won't be featuring on Violator songs, so it's always challenging to make a new record keeping totally faithful to the genre and not to sound repetitive. In the other hand this feeling of "pressure" makes us try to improve our music, what I find awesome. 

Rock Bottom: ¿Por qué graban CD's a medias con otras bandas en vez de lanzar uno de larga duración propio?

Capaça: Creo que los "CD Split" son una buena forma de celebrar la sociedad entre dos bandas. Otro detalle es que nuestras canciones que se incluyen en los Splits han sido editados anteriormente en otro material como por ejemplo un EP de 7", el cual es un buen formato para coleccionar. Tenemos dos EP's y dos discos de larga duración. Lanzamos EP's, que son más cortos que un disco de larga duración, en momentos en los cuales nos resultaba más oportuno hacerlo. Nuestro EP "Violent Mosh", que se suponía sería nuestro segundo demo, pero cuando Antonio Rolldao de Kill Again lo escuchó nos propuso lanzarlo como EP. Nuestro segundo EP, "Annihilation Process", fue editado después de "Chemical Assault" y cuando Cambito se unió a la banda. Nuestro gran amigo y antiguo guitarrista Juan Lerda dejó la banda y se mudó a Buenos Aires. Por el cambio de la formación pasamos mucho tiempo trabajando a ritmo lento, por lo cual decidimos lanzar un material más corto para poder lanzarlo lo más rápido posible.

Rock Bottom: Why did you record split CDs instead of an own full-length albums? 

Capaça: I think splits are a good way to celebrate partnership between two bands. Other detail is that our songs that features on splits were taken from materials that have been released previously but re-released in a different format like 7' EP for example, which is really nice format to collect. We have two EPs and full lengths. We released the EPs, that a little shorter than the full lengths, in times that were really opportune for us to release a shorter release. Our first EP, Violent Mosh, was supposed to be our second demo, but when Antonio Rolldão from Kill Again listened to it he proposed to release officially as an EP. Our second EP, Annihilation Process, was released after Chemical Assault and when Cambito joined the band. Our great friend and former guitarrist Juan Lerda had just left the band and moved to Buenos Aires. Because of the line-up change we spend a lot of time in a slow pace so we decided we wanted record a shorter material so we could release it as soon as possible.  

Rock Bottom: Uno de esos "Split CD" lo hicieron con los legendarios Hirax; ¿cómo se contactaron con la banda para hacer el disco?

Capaça: No lo recuerdo bien en verdad, pero creo que sucedió cuando tocamos junto a Hirax en el True Thrash Fest en Osaka, Japón. Después del show estábamos tomando unas cervezas y Katon preguntó: "Por qué no lanzamos un disco juntos?". Antonio Rolldão de Kill Again Records estaba ahí en ese momento y cuando nosotros regresamos a Brasil él empezó a hacer todo para que el lanzamiento se haga realidad.

Rock Bottom: One of your split CDs was "Raging Thrash", with the legend Hirax, how did you take contact with them to do that album? 

Capaça: I don't remember really well, but I think it happened when we played together Violator and Hirax on True Thrash Fest in Osaka - Japan. After the concert we were having some beers and Katon asked: "Why don't we release something together?". Antonio Rolldão from Kill Again was there at the moment and when we came back to Brazil he started to make everything to the release to come true.

Rock Bottom: ¿Cuales son sus infuencias?

Capaça: Hay diferentes géneros del rock que disfruto pero mi pasión son el Thrash y el Death Metal. También tengo una banda llamada Considered Dead con la cual tocamos Death Metal de la vieja escuela. Incluso cuando disfrutamos distintos géneros, la influencia de Violator es el puro Thrash hecho en los '80. Dentro del Thrash tenemos como influencia de muchas escenas diferentes como por ejemplo el Thrash americano, el canadiense, el brasilero, el alemán y otros.

Rock Bottom: What are your influences? 

Capaça: There are a different genres of Rock that I enjoy but my big passions are Thrash Metal e and Death Metal. I also have a band called Considered Dead that plays old school Death Metal. Even tough we enjoy different musical genres the influences of Violator are pure Thrash made in the 80's. Inside of the Thrash Metal we are influenced by many different scenes for example American Thrash Metal, Canadian, Brazilian, German Thrash and so on. 

Rock Bottom: ¿Cómo logran tocar thrash de la vieja escuela y seguir sonando frescos?

Capaça: No sabría como responder esta entrevista jejeje. No es intencional. Nosotros solo tocamos el Thrash Metal que escuchamos. Esta bueno saber que crees que nosotros sonamos frescos incluso tocando el Thrash de la vieja escuela. 

Rock Bottom: How do you manage to play old school thrash and still sound fresh? 

Capaça: I wouldn't know how to answer this question, hehehe. It's not intentional. We just play the Thrash Metal we like to listen to. It's cool to know that you think we sound fresh even playing old school Thrash Metal.

Rock Bottom: ¿Puedes contarnos alguna anécdota sobre algo extraño o gracioso que les haya pasado a lo largo de su carrera?

Capaça: Cosas graciosas nos pasaron casi en cada viaje que hemos hecho! Usualmente son graciosas y trágicas a la vez. En nuestro último concierto, por ejemplo, Cambito saltó de la plataforma de la batería y se rompió los ligamentos de la rodilla al aterrizar. Cuando Poney vio la situación, Cambito estaba tirado en el piso, y comenzó a actuar como si estuviese violando la cabeza de Cambito. Yo no sabía lo que estaba pasando pero cuando miré la escena inmediatamente pensé que Poney era el responsable por la lastimadura de Cambito en la rodilla. Sólo entendí lo que había pasado cuando miré los videos en youtube al día siguiente. 

Rock Bottom: Could you share with us some weird or funny events that have happened to you during your career? 

Capaça: Funny events happens almost every trip we make! They are usually funny and tragic at the same time. On our last concert for example Cambito jumped from the drums platform and broke his knee ligaments when he hit the ground. When Poney saw that Cambito was lying down in the floor, he started pretending fucking Cambito's head. I didn't know what was going on but when I looked at that scene it I immediately thought that Poney was responsible for hurting Cambito's knee. I just understand the situation when I watched the videos on youtube on the other day. 

Rock Bottom: Ustedes tocaron por Europa, Japón y casi en todos lados en Sudamérica, ¿en qué lugares les gustaría tocar en el futuro?

Capaça: Nunca hemos tocado en Estados Unidos. Creo que sería una gran experiencia tocar allá. Otro lugar en el cual nos gustaría tocar es en África y Asia. Espero que podamos logarlo algún día.

Rock Bottom: You did gigs in Europe, Japan and almost all places in South America, what places do you want to play in the future? 

Capaça: We never played in the United States. I think it would be a great experience to play there. Other than that we would like to tour in Africa and in Asia. I hope we can manage to this some day. 

Rock Botttom: El 18 de abril volverán a la Argentina, ¿qué pueden esperar los fanáticos del show? ¿Y qué impresión les quedó del público la otra vez que estuvieron en Buenos Aires?

Capaça: Rediseñamos nuestra lista de canciones. A aquellos que disfrutaron de "Scenarios of Brutality" les gustará la nueva lista. Seguro todos pueden esperar headbanging sin parar! Buenos Aires es una gran ciudad y los fanáticos es incluso mejor! Nuestro último show en Buenos Aires fue increíble, uno de nuestros mejores recitales. Los metaleros argentinos son locos! Espero que este próximo recital sea tan bueno como el último o mejor. Será genial encontrarnos con Juan y todos nuestros amigos una vez más!

Rock Bottom: On April 18th you will come back to Argentina, what can expect the fans from your show? And what was your impression of the fans the last time you played in Buenos Aires?

Capaça: We redesigned our set list. The one's who enjoyed Scenarios of Brutality will like the new one. Everybody can expect unstoppable head banging for sure!  Buenos Aires is great city and the audience is even greater! Our last concert in Buenos Aires was incredible, one of the best concerts of all. Argentinian head bangers are insane! I hope this next gig can be as good as the last one or even better. It will be great to meet Juan and all our friends one more time!
