Rock Bottom: What is the story behind the reunion of the original line-up of Exciter?

John Ricci: After  the last version of Exciter  came to an end in 2013 my plan was just to take a year off and take a break from the music business. I didn`t want to deal with any musicians, I needed to re-focus on my next move and decide what to do.
One day Dan contacted me and expressed  interest that he and original bassist Allan Johnson wanted to get back together. At first I wasn`t sure because like I said I just needed relaxation from the whole music thing but after about a few days of thinking about it I thought to myself it would be cool if the original 3 members were back together, so I contacted Dan and Allan and said okay lets pick up where we left off back in 1985!

Rock Bottom: Why have you took different ways back in the 80ies? And what is the reason of so much line-up changes?

John Ricci: In the summer of 1985 we had just finished a US tour and it  was a long  7 weeks of being on the road, so all kinds of stuff happened that most bands experience . For us everything was new and we didn`t really know how to handle certain situations that happen on the road so as a result we had all lot of difference of opinion on certain issues which resulted in me leaving the band . Afterwards the band continued and I was replaced by a guitarist that was a friend of Dan and Allan, that line-up ended in 1988 . Sometime later in 1990 myself and Dan reunited without Allan but that ended in 1993.
I decided to continue Exciter and recruited new musicians and carried on for many years recording and touring, I never gave up I just keep going. I think the problem with the line-up changes is that no matter which musicians played in Exciter they did not share the same musical vision as the original line-up. So, musicians would come and go because I think their ideas were always declined.

Rock Bottom: How did you feel playing together?

John Ricci: The reunion has been very positive  and we get along very well, we are older and wiser now and we handle situations much better now, ha, ha.

Rock Bottom: Do you have plans for a new record?

John Ricci: We are planning a new record but the song writing is going a bit slow because we`ve been so busy playing shows around the world.

Rock Bottom: How do you see the future of the band?

John Ricci: Well we`re just going to keep playing and making records as long as we can.

Rock Bottom: Exciter has one of the few bands with a drummer who sings... I imagine it's a very hard task, isn't it? How do you manage it?

John Ricci: Dan is a natural at drumming and singing lead vocal. When we first formed the band we all tried to sing lead vocal but it was obvious that Dan was the best singer. It`s very physically demanding but I`m not sure where he gets his energy from, I think it`s because he`s been doing it for such a long time, he doesn`t think about it he just does it !

Rock Bottom: En febrero van a venir a Argentina, ¿qué podemos esperar del show?

Rock Bottom: In February you will come to Argentina, what can we expect from the show? Did you enjoy the gig in Buenos Aires last year?

John Ricci: Argentina is a really strong market for Exciter, we didn`t realize we have so many fans there ! At our next shows there we are including about 6 different songs that we didn`t play last time, there are so many good Exciter songs it`s difficult to play all of them. The Buenos Aires gig last time was great , so many fans were in attendance it blew us away, hopefully this time they`ll be even more!

Big thanks to John Ricci for his time and for his kindness!
